When a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is installed at high altitude, the surrounding air becomes thinner. Although this may seem like a minor environmental factor, it can have a significant impact on the VFD’s cooling performance and electrical insulation.
The first major concern is heat dissipation. During operation, power components such as IGBTs, rectifiers, and capacitors generate heat. Most VFDs rely on air cooling to remove this heat. As altitude increases, air density decreases, which means the same cooling system may not be able to remove heat as effectively. As a result, the internal temperature of the VFD can rise more quickly.
To prevent excessive temperature rise, VFD manufacturers often specify output current derating at higher altitudes. In other words, a VFD that can deliver its full rated current at standard altitude may need to operate at a reduced current when installed at a higher elevation. The exact derating requirement depends on the manufacturer, VFD model, cooling method, and installation conditions.
The second consideration is electrical insulation. Atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude, reducing the dielectric strength of air. This can affect electrical clearances and insulation performance, particularly in higher-voltage equipment. For high-altitude applications, the VFD’s insulation design and applicable altitude limits should therefore be carefully checked.
For this reason, altitude should not be treated as just another environmental parameter when selecting a VFD. In addition to voltage, power, and current, engineers should also consider the installation altitude, ambient temperature, cooling method, and manufacturer’s altitude derating requirements.
In simple terms:
Higher altitude → lower air density → reduced cooling capacity → possible current derating.
At the same time:
Higher altitude → lower atmospheric pressure → reduced air insulation strength → greater insulation considerations.
Therefore, if a VFD is going to be installed in a high-altitude location, always check the manufacturer’s maximum installation altitude and derating curve before finalizing the selection.
A VFD designed for high-altitude operation is not simply about choosing a larger power rating—it is about ensuring that both thermal performance and electrical insulation remain reliable under the actual operating conditions.
